I adored the scenery of Florence, adding even more of a colourful splash of magic to the story, and could easily picture myself alongside the characters as they strolled along sun-dappled pavements, considering their futures. Alternating between the perspectives of Tess and Gus, the novel explores the conflicts and challenges of new love and old loyalties, passion and duty, logic and belief, with readers racing to find out if the couple can or can't be together. Set between London and Italy across many years, this is the complex love story of Tess and Gus, who have to overcome so many differences and outside forces to be together, but who seem to somehow be fated. Obviously the expectation would be that the story would follow all of Tess and Gus’s missed chances for years, which in itself is gripping, but the fact that the author starts right when they finally meet properly, and instead only briefly references all those twists of fate throughout, is fascinating.

A captivating story about love…at times heartbreaking and at others uplifting… and an ending that is as poignant as it is perfect. But alas, here I am, having worked up the courage to do just that, and hoping that I make some sort of sense while doing so. When my mother used to read me fairy tales, I think I always focused on the ‘ever after’ instead of the ‘happily’.

Eberlen weaves escape with a daydream-like quality, but at the same, infuses a sense of realness and raw emotion. Now despite the intoxicating Florence and Sicily settings which had me *this* close to booking a flight, this isn’t always an uplifting love story without heartache and tragedy - it’s complex and devastating at times (that ending 😭). Or would two people whose lives had failed to connect for many years, keep on just missing each other even when they were together? Dear readers, it has been such a long time since I last wrote a book review, so if this review at any time seems a bit wobbly or loose in its structure, I do apologise.Laura Jane Williams***Tess and Gus are strangers when their lives collide one sun-drenched morning in Florence, but it feels as if fate has brought them together. EVER AFTER is a stand-alone novel but re-introduces the characters of Tess and Gus who first appeared in my novel MISS YOU. Kate skilfully upends the expectation of a happily-ever-after ending, exploring the complexities of long-term love. Because Tess’s mum and auntie are correct - falling in love is just the beginning, and it’s what comes after that’s important. It was such a finely balanced novel, with lots of darkness but also the beauty of art, food, music and of course, love! You know it’s a good novel when you have to immediately flick back to the beginning to reread some bits to help you process the ending, which is exactly what I had to do!
