Measure and cut the fadeless art paper so that it starts and ends a couple of inches away from the crayon top and bottom. Use a glue gun to adhere the paper to the mailing tube. Before the grandeur of the colossal crayon sweeps us off our feet, let’s recall the modest journey of the crayon itself. Originating from the Latin word “creta,” meaning clay, early crayons were a mix of chalk and clay. Over time, with the introduction of paraffin wax and pigments, the modern crayon found its way into every artist’s toolbox and every child’s schoolbag. Cut out the main piece for the giant crayon from poster board or Canson paper. You will need to cut two pieces measuring 22″ x 5″. Glue them together, overlapping one piece by 5.5″. They giant crayons are simple to make and are great decor for parties, children’s rooms or the classroom. I used my Cricut to cut everything which made them especially easy to whip together. I’m sharing the SVG cut file, as well as a PDF pattern if you are cutting the shapes out by hand, so you can make a giant crayon too.

I then taped the paper portion with 2 thin layers but before the final layer dried, I took off the washi tape so that I had a nice clean edge! Before painting the paper, I used washi tape to tape off the top and bottom portion – I taped off about 2″ from the top rim (under the cardboard triangle top) and about 1.5″ from the bottom of the crayon. This gave me the length of the paper to paint! 🙂 Set aside in a safe place and wait about 24 hours for the glue to completely dry. Once the glue is completely dry the next day, give the top and bottom of the giant crayon another coat of spray paint. Let dry completely. You will first paint the actual crayon wax portion (the portion that is the very top and very bottom). I just chose to paint the top triangle and the top 1/4 portion as well as the bottom 4-5 inches of the crayon! 🙂 I painted 2 thin layers just to be sure that it was all covered smooth and even! 🙂

With your E6000 glue, you will want to glue your cardboard cone to the top of your mailing tube and also glue your tube together (or shut) so that the top doesn’t come open if you don’t want it to (although it could be a super cool secret crayon storage container! 🙂 Step 1. Place the paper mache cone on top of the mailing tube. I wanted the top of the crayon to sit inside the top of the tube so it looked better and was easier to glue, but it was too big (see the above photo). These giant crayons actually end up looking pretty realistic. Who doesn’t love a bright, colorful crayon with a sharp tip straight out of the box?
