Tell us why you liked or disliked the book; using examples and comparisons is a great way to do this. Other themes include the role of women, tradition and family and facing the changing world of the 20th century. Beneath the waters of the Perdido River, she turns into something terrifying, a creature whispered about in stories that have chilled the residents of Perdido for generations. It could easily be a great historical novel if Elinor wasn't a man-eating river monster in disguise. Her novel Liquor was recently published to general critical acclaim, and her followup novel, Prime, will be released in 2005.

I know I have a tough hide when it comes to creepy stuff, but I struggled to lose myself in the atmosphere of this book. In Blackwater, McDowell tells the lives of four generations of the Caskey family of Perdido, Alabama. It’s truly a unique piece of art that you will only experience from the master of his craft, Michael McDowell. There are ups and there are lows, but one thing is for sure, the women of the Caskey clan sure do take care of business. From the onset, the Blackwater series was right up my alley: southern family saga, and for a bit of fun, throw a swamp monster into the mix. That was the great misconception about men: because they dealt with money, because they could hire someone on and later fire him, because they alone filled state assemblies and were elected congressional representatives, everyone thought they had power. I've never listened to an audio book where it was easier for me to identify who was who, just by how the narrator voiced them. This saddened me because this book and "The Elementals" are brilliant works and the book community lost so much.McDowell was at the height of his powers when he wrote Blackwater,a six-part novel about the powers exerted by the mysterious Elinor Dammert over the citizens of Perdido, Alabama and her ghastly and inexplicable ability to use water to gain her hideous ends.
