He thinks Terence Baileys cow has it but it turns out it just has cowpox which is has gotten from the baby who was just vaccinated for smallpox. There aren't any amusing anecdotes about Tricki Woo but there is a cute story about a Scottish Terrier and Tristan.

The tough flight instructor reminds him of Seigfreid and his mates have become close friends like Tristan. Now personally, that WWII is always present but not really over-used or even featured that much as a flesh and blood scenario at all (and obviously seen and approached as secondary compared to the description and depiction of James Herriot's personal pilot training stories and of course the animal cases featured, the cows, dogs, cats etc. There’s more time with Tristian, Siegfried’s young, partier brother who always manages to get in the most terrible scrapes. They end up having to transport the difficult cat to and from the old woman’s house, and then she won’t pay until the stitches are taken out. Having said that, the service of the men and women who fought in WWII should always be revered for the sacrifices they made. Going AWOL through a series of misadventures, one including marching along with another platoon, James risks everything to go back home for the birth of his child in an especially endearing and tear-jerking, edge-of-the-seat adventure that is a perfect example of why this open-hearted autobiographical series is so touching and beloved today. I felt a kinship with him and his magical world, and marveled at his talent for drawing me into his cast of characters. The Herriot books are often described as "animal stories" (Wight himself was known to refer to them as his "little cat-and-dog stories"), and given that they are about the life of a country veterinarian, animals certainly play a significant role in most of the stories.

The melody may have political origins in the English Civil War, and its name is thought to be a reference to the Royal Oak, a tree at Boscobel, Shropshire in which King Charles II hid himself in 1651. The hymn is often sung to the hymn tune All Things Bright And Beautiful, composed by William Henry Monk in 1887. Although he would have preferred to stay at home, he went out in the cold to help the animal, and in the process exposed him to the coughs and chills of the owners.During that wonderful time, I'd be beaten senseless by a kangaroo, held hostage by a love-struck chimpanzee, chased by angry hogs, and sat on by a miniature horse inside of a well-known celebrity's home.

This tune was first arranged for the hymn by Martin Shaw in 1916, published in his book for children, Song Time. Along the way, as the barracks becomes a center of lung infection and depression and James’ crazed flight teacher screams in his ear, Herriot remembers the successes and the heartbreaking failures: the cat who died of cancer on Christmas after delivering her kitten to a safe and loving home; the emergency road-side resuscitation of a Golden Retriever asphyxiating on a rubber ball; the miraculous recovery of a mauled and mutilated dog brought back to life (and a good owner); the adventures of a cat meant for death who instead lives and loves with the Herriot’s – while also attending all village meetings and get togethers; and much more ranging from horrific epidemics of foot-and-mouth to simple stories that revealed the strength and hardship of life and learning. Herriot may not be the most polished author but his books have a sense of warmth around them and I feel like I know Helen, Tristan, Siegfried and James. Tristan still has tricks up his sleeve, Siegfried is still the charming and talented man that he is, and Jim and Helen are the best. For a particularly whiplash-inducing experience, I listened to this book on audiobook during the same week that I read The Nightmare Stacks in hardcover, a weird scifi/fantasy invasion story that also just so happened to be set in the Yorkshire Dales. If you watched and liked the TV dramatisation based on these memoirs (from the 1970's I think), you will adore these books.

Material from his books has also been adapted as a film, All Creatures Great and Small (1975), as a television series of the same name in 1978 and another in 2020. He's dreaming of his beloved Helen, now pregnant with their first child and thinking of the salt of the earth farmers scratching out an existance with smallish herds of cattle. Just like "Great and Small", this is a delightful, beautifully written book which I found very hard to put down. James evokes his own homesickness in a way that is heartbreakingly British – chin-up and stiff-upper lip all the way while everything around him from the dust motes floating in the air bring back memories of a place and life he longs for. There were deeply moving stories that dealt with depression and how pets can ease a person's mental anguish. The patrons pitched in money and he performed the surgery on the dog, but the owner just treated the fact as though the dog’s illness had cleared up by itself. Nevertheless, the sentiments of this verse are generally considered to be outdated and many later versions and performances of "All Things Bright and Beautiful" omit the third verse.
