The star's thoughts reveal a man unwilling to suffer fools or mince his words - most of the time Alan Rickman's voice was a purr, but it masked sharp claws . All in all, I am left with the view that he was, after all, just a person like any other and my memory of him would have been richer had I not read this. You feel he always wanted to do what was right, even if it was inconvenient to himself, and that is a rare character trait . I sensed the surliness from his performances, and Rickman was best known for his villain in Die Hard, opposite Bruce Willis, and for playing Severus Snape in eight Harry Potter movies.

I thought the self important thespian grated when referencing political events and meetings with politicians with an apparently blinkered naïveté about politics. The mention of ‘process’ brings me to something that Rickman expounds on strongly, and regularly in his diaries. I read a lot of novels so it took a while to get used to reading a book made up entirely of snippets of someone's thoughts. Rickman's journals were meant to act as reference for a potential memoir; a memoir life did not permit him time to compose.Madly, Deeply is a subtle piece of business and requires more dedication than one is used to expending on content from a posthumous diary.

I imagine he would prefer to be remembered for his theatre work, though the majority of that took place in London and far from the world's maddening crowds. Another thing which bothered me was Emma Thompson's foreword; it was gaudy and badly written, misleading even. The pages are a catalogue of who’s who in the theatre and film worlds, short footnotes give full names to the many abbreviations and initials, their nationalities and jobs – e.Her afterword, which she read for the audiobook, was very emotional and one of the best parts of the audiobook for me. It's like he's invited readers backstage access into his life (gatecrash more like, as I don't think we're invited). Having established himself as a major classical stage actor Rickman transferred to the Hollywood screen with a glint in his eye and a sly smile.
