Adding the teleconverter was another pleasant surprise, there was minimal degradation in sharpness (and I’ve conducted these tests at the extremes of each end of the focal range) which sets this device ahead of my Canon x1. The lens incorporates a new focusing system which powers two high-grade elements using dual linear motors for ultra-quick and near-silent focusing.

But, since I needed even longer than 300 to capture those birds, the 100-400 proved to be a better tool and I can use it without teleconverters (although it will take them too). I actually managed to get a reasonably sharp result at 1/10, but not consistently and to be reasonably sure I’d draw the line at 1/20th.

The apertures are formed by a 9-blade rounded diaphragm; the fast aperture, rounded blades, and 300mm equivalent focal length predicts decent bokeh in the out of focus areas.

You can program the button to AF Stop, AEL/AFL, video record, Preview, White balance, AF Area Select, AF Area Home, MF, Raw, Test Picture, any Myset, exposure compensation, Live Guide, Digital Tele-Converter, Keystone Compensation, Magnify, HDR, BKT, ISO, WB, Multi Function, Peaking, and Off. While at infinity, the diagonal angle of view is essentially the same as with any other 300mm equivalent optic, there is a marked difference at shorter focus distances. I really don’t need to say much about this lens’ build… if you know the 12-40 Pro…this lens is the 12-40 but 40-150. The dedicated Lens Hood LH-76 uses a slider-locking mechanism that allows you to slide down the hood while it is still attached. Excellent – The equipment should be close to being ‘Like New’ but there may be some small cosmetic blemishes that lower its grade.Teleconverter Compatible Dustproof Construction Super EDA Glass Detachable Tripod Mount Dual VCM AutoFocus Bright f2.

A ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions. However, I think with editing the MC-20 image I would be happier than with the substantially cropped bare lens based on having more data available to make a larger print. With the focus ring in its normal position, manual focusing works just like it does on any other Micro Four Thirds lens. However, recognising that bokeh evaluation is subjective, we have provided a few examples for your perusal. It seems to keep up better with predictable motion than random motion, as you’d expect from contrast detect focus (yes, the E-M1 does mostly contrast detect focus with this lens; the E-M1 does full-time phase detect focus only with the older adapted 4/3 lenses; for m4/3 lenses it appears that the camera does initial phase detect to determine direction to focus, but actual focus is mostly contrast detect).I have the 40-150 Pro too and i agree that it’s a fantastic piece of kit – as indeed is the rest of the OMD system. As you can see, my depth of field was extremely shallow, and I have to be very precise with my focus point on my subjects’ eyes. But in nature and sport photography sharpness is crucial – in this line of work we do need to show as much detail as possible in our subject and kit lenses won’t always cut the mustard. Similarly to the previous comparison, you’ll again see more evidence of onion-ringing from the 40-150mm compared to the 75mm due to its optical construction, although again the zoom delivers a higher contrast image when the aperture on both is wide-open. The thin body constructed by metal, constructed of rich 6 elements in 3 groups (1 HR lens) promises virtually no image degradation.
