In the Spring Term, children will progress through Phase 3 of the programme, learning many new phonemes and graphemes including digraphs (2 letters making 1 sound, and trigraphs, 3 letters making 1 sound). You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. It is our intention to ensure that, by the end of their primary education, all pupils (including those with SEND) are able to read fluently, and with confidence, in any subject in their forthcoming secondary education by ensuring all children have the appropriate word reading and comprehension skills. As well as a presentation of the key features of the programme we also allow plenty of time for questions during these hour-long sessions. Our Little Wandle SEND Programme has been developed to be used with the graduated approach to teach children to learn to read in small steps that provide the right amount of challenge.

Unfortunately we do not have capacity to offer 1:1 briefings with individual schools and our information briefings are not recorded. This system judges the level of difficulties based on how many letters per word, how many words per page, how many lines per page, how many pages per book not on reading progression. Each group, of up to 6 children, spends 20 mins with a highly trained adult exploring how to decode the book in the first sessions, how to read with fluency and expression in the Prosody sessions and finally checking their understanding of the text in the Comprehension sessions. We teach letter formation using our formation phrases, which make a link between the mnemonic and the letter.

There are two different types of books that pupils bring home: reading practice and books to share for pleasure. We recommend that international schools contact our membership team in the first instance to discuss your requirements. At Wooburn Green Primary School, it is our aim that every child will learn to read, no matter what barriers they may have to their learning. It provides pathways for pupils who may need very specific adaptations to the teaching steps because they have complex needs, and has been developed with the advice from Special schools across the country.

This is a much faster paced and age appropriate version of the Little Wandle scheme which enables children to access age appropriate reading and therefore the full curriculum much more rapidly, and also prepares them for the KS3 curriculum when they move onto secondary school. You can also get your questions answered in person at one of our regular, free information briefings or by contacting our membership team. Pupils in EY and KS1 are given reading books each week, which directly link to the phonics sounds they are being taught so that phonics knowledge is consolidated. As you will know from our recent phonics meeting for parents and carers, the school has introduced a new phonics programme this year which we are very excited about and are sure will help your child develop the phonetic knowledge they need to become confident, happy and fluent readers. Children start phase 2 of the Little Wandle phonics programme as soon as possible after starting Reception, usually week 2 of the Autumn term when children are settled in their new surroundings.
