Barnes is giving you Titanic but make it scary, she’s giving you Event Horizon, she’s giving you Ghost Ship; for real, this book will make your skin crawl. I really think the reader was left with such a whiny convoluted mess that she did not have a chance for a great performance.

Anyhow I ate this book in literally one sitting because I was in the mood to be freaked out and it delivered tremendously. He is a Scotsman in exile who has lived in London for over two decades and credits discovering SE Hinton and Robert Cormier as a 13-year-old for his huge appetite for books. In short, the vast majority of this book is self-deprecating internal monologues by a character that hates herself so much you as a reader can’t possibly help but feel the same. Unfortunately, “Dead Silence” is boring, confusing, and failed to be even remotely scary in the grand scheme of things. Inspirations for the book came from the Alien franchise and the films Ghost Ship and Event Horizon, as well as the sinking of the RMS Titanic.

While narrating the events to the investigators it becomes clear that Claire can see ghosts, something she had always been in denial about but finally admits to herself is genuine. But, like Kate with her reading of science fiction stories, I do make exceptions for horror stories that cross over into my preferred genres. A. Barnes’ Dead Silence, a SF horror novel in which a woman and her crew board a decades-lost luxury cruiser and find the wreckage of a nightmare that hasn’t yet ended. I also really liked the way the larger corporations in this book play into setting the stage and some of the greater conflicts that exist in this story.Separate timelines don’t bother me much – if handled well they add spice to the story – and I’m still looking forward to this one, but I will keep your… warnings in mind once I get to this book. and what harm could there be in boarding a ship that, despite being top of the line in every way, abruptly and inexplicably went dark and has been floating through places unknown full of whatever's left of whatever fate its passengers met, undisturbed and unprovoked for decades? Silence holds over the channel in my helmet for a long moment, my harsh, uneven breathing filling all the empty space, drowning out even the noise that might be the engines. While on a corporate space job, our group of five get an emergency signal and decide to investigate. We’ve gone over this before, but I always like to preface my reviews of this genre with a note: I’m not super into Sci Fi as a genre, though there are certain exceptions that I am good with.

I had the definite impression that the rest of the crew isn't exactly 100% mentally healthy either, but I'm not sure this is developed as well as it could be. Dead Silence feels like a great book for sci-fi readers that are intimidated by endless worldbuilding, as you get just enough to the setting to make the world feel real while also being able to follow the story easily. The Plot Summary: Claire hears and sees ghost based on a tragedy that killed both her parents when she was younger.

Out in space there aren't many places to get help and when a distress signal is received, it's something that has to be investigated. it's a whizz-bang adventure story about a beacon-repair crew on the tail-end of their final mission, after which machines will take over the work from humans like some futuristic version of the industrial revolution. Release Date: October 11th, 2022 Genre(s): Adult fiction, Science-fiction, Literary fiction Publisher: Tordotcom Pages: 304 Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️.

It’s definitely plot focused and while we do get to know about Claire’s past, I never felt close to her, and she often annoyed me. This is great, immersive, atmospheric space horror that shows Barnes is a talented storyteller and proves that, despite rumors to the contrary, horror belongs in space. Their salvage claim could solve the entire team’s problems and take away all worries about the future. Once aboard, Claire discovers that Kane is still alive, as he had sequestered himself in a makeshift padded room that he claims dampens vibrations he says causes hallucinations.Expertly paced, this novel is full of old ghosts in every way possible, and will haunt you long after the last page. The trauma of that event has stayed with her since, affecting her mind thus making her a somewhat unreliable narrator at times.
