Other players might have been tempted to fill in the gaps here just because they could, but Beck’s approach was both restrained and magical, with not a note wasted. Of the rest of the material, a version of the Beatles' She's A Woman stands out, on which Beck uses a Talk Box before Peter Frampton ‘made it his’, while on You Know What I Mean he shows that he has been listening carefully to the Mahavishnu Orchestra, and on the Diamond Dust version he successfully enters progressive territory.

Jeff Beck made his mark with the landmark album Truth, an album that was every bit as great as Led Zeppelin in its heaviness, and acoustic breaks as well. But it's Beck version with the Jeff Beck Group – including Rod Stewart on vocals and Ron Wood on bass – that stung the hardest. This album needs a fire extinguisher nearby, such is the energy and great sounds of good old fashioned real rock and roll and good times. Micky Waller’s replacement on the drum stool Tony Newman provides a thunderous bedrock for Beck’s monster riff-a-rama and lightning solo runs.

It included two songs that had not yet been released and had been recorded at Sun Studios - Train Kept A-Rollin' and Mister, You're a Better Man Than I - the latter of which would be released in the UK in February of the following year as the B-side of Shapes Of Things. Little is known of what Jeff Beck occupied himself with during that time, which is probably why this album serves as more of a reminder that he is still around, less of a grand stylistic statement.Luckily for Beck, he had become good friends with Stevie Wonder (whose Superstition he composed with Beck in mind) and Wonder gave him a couple of remarkable songs, in particular the excellent Cause We've Ended As Lovers, whose performance Beck dedicates to Roy Buchanan . The Yardbirds' second Top 10 hit (their first, "For Your Love," was released a few months before and featured Eric Clapton on guitar) marked one of Beck's early career highlights. That does not mean that this final offering under the Jeff Beck Group banner should be dismissed as a mere transitional piece to greater things.
