Apologies for republishing this, but apparently some haters thought it would be funny to report my review and get it taken down because they have nothing better to do. There are no clues or hints to explain her disappearance and the police keep coming up empty handed. A volcanic eruption is quite another, for, as the journalist who does a framing voice-over narration for Brooks’ latest puts it, when Mount Rainier popped its cork, “it was the psychological aspect, the hyperbole-fueled hysteria that had ended up killing the most people.

As the novel progresses, Laurel becomes increasingly determined to learn what happened to Ellie, especially after discovering an odd connection between Poppy’s mother and her daughter even as her relationship with Floyd is becoming more serious. There is absolutely nothing better than a blindsighted twist in a psychological thriller and unfortunately there wasn’t a single one in this book. In fact, I almost want to go back and read the book again knowing the conclusion and be more aware of the plot points I missed the first time around. Also, I really enjoyed how she leaves us with little snippets of clues along the way for us readers to pick up on right away and start questioning and guessing how they fit into the story. I figured the "mystery" out but that did not spoil the book for me, as I kept turning the pages to see who else was going to figure the book out.

Heavner isn’t exactly mollified when Tempe, aided by retired police detective Skinny Slidell and a host of experts, puts a name to the dead man. Indeed, the novel does double duty as a survival manual, packed full of good advice—for instance, try not to get wounded, for “injury turns you from a giver to a taker. I became invested in the feelings of Eliie’s mother, and as a mother of four daughters, I wanted so badly for things to somehow turn out that this poor woman didn’t have to continue without knowing what happened to her missing beautiful, intelligent, golden girl! She never in a million years could have predicted the shocking revelations her inquiries would uncover or the personal epiphanies that would change Laurel's life forevermore.I received a ARC of this novel from the publisher through Edelweiss, thank you, will post to public media upon publication. Meanwhile the family has fallen apart - a divorce for Paul and Laurel and sort of an estrangement between their children. heres what i think for this one: floyd was involved in ellies disappearance (i dont think it will be a kidnapping, but maybe manipulated to run away? Brooks presents a case for making room for Bigfoot in the world while peppering his narrative with timely social criticism about bad behavior on the human side of the conflict: The explosion of Rainier might have been better forecast had the president not slashed the budget of the U.

I can’t wait to read more titles by this author and already have 2 of them on my library waiting list. A golden girl, favorite daughter with a brilliant future ahead of her: Ellie tells her mother save the last piece of lasagna for her and she is going to the library but it will not take long for her to come back. And even though I had an inkling about where this was going, it didn't diminish my pleasure in this read at all. Laurel, Ellie's mother, couldn’t understand how her other children and her husband were able to move on with their lives without knowing what happened to Ellie.I'm going to avoid any details here, as I want you to have the most fabulous reading experience with this one possible, so I'll stick to describing it with some buzz words. It’s been ten years since Ellie disappeared, but Laurel has never given up hope of finding her daughter. Is it possible that Laurel could, at long last, find all the answers about her daughter’s disappearance? Populated with fantastic characters, this was a fascinating and moving story about obsession, loss, and family.
