years ago, the world was introduced to a mythic world, teeming with elemental powers and a heroic trio of teenagers at the center of it. But I enjoyed it the same way I enjoy a somewhat decent fanfic, and even then, if this was fanfic I would be rating it for different reasons. Additionally, the spirit ended up transformed into a gigantic monstrous form that reflected Azula's inner self. While former princess Azula has countless egregious sins to atone for, the world of Avatar is rife with redemption, like Fire Lord Zuko himself. Being a massive fan of all things avatar, including the books I was really looking forward to reading Azula in the Spirit Temple.

While yes, some anime filler can feel tedious, the best of it often feels like we get much deeper insights into our characters so that when the big moments DO happen, they are that much more rewarding to experience. Azula is a very interesting character and it was nice to get a peek into her mind, but the story didn't really accomplish anything. Turns around to look at Ursa and the spirit with anger and determination, making them flinch back in fear. The only issue comes from when they’re placed together, and the action doesn’t flow from panel to panel so much as it cuts from each moment to moment.Which is extremely disappointing considering that she is one of the most interesting characters from the series who you start out hating but end up just feeling bad for. More recently in the Avatar: The Last Airbender sequel comics, Azula has become obsessed with causing instability in her brother's Fire Nation through political turmoil and upheaval. Now this is the part where we’re going to delve into spoilers, because it’s an important part of the character exploration, so read on at your own risk.

It's still not the end of her story, but contrary to the other entries in Hicks' comic-run, I'm willing to let this one slide. Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: One of Azula's visions has Iroh, Zuko, and Ursa praising her for conquering Ba Sing Se, killing the Avatar and thereby ending the war, and becoming Fire Lord, respectively.

Azula is on the run, but constantly attempting to destabilize the Fire Nation, and pursued by Ty Lee. When the air settles, Azula finds herself in the middle of a forest, her cloak hanging from a branch. For fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Azula is one of the most charismatic and compelling villains of all time, and a solo installment of Dark Horse Comics’ graphic novel continuations has been well overdue. Young Azula is kneeling on the floor and holding a burning turtle duck figurine, surrounded by broken pieces.

Azula wakes up and stretches, combs her hair with a smile, and exits the tent after getting ready for the day. Picking up sometime after the end of Avatar: The Last Airbender - Smoke and Shadow, the story begins when an attempted insurrection campaign of the Fire Warriors goes south and lands one of their own captured, creating dissent in the ranks and causing them to seemingly abandon Azula. The character designs are all very clean and instantly recognizable, and new characters have equally unique and distinctive designs that are filled with personality. Azula shoots a blast of fire at the spirit, who leaps away, revealing that she has hands instead of legs. Azula’s Acolytes in this story, much like the fandom, see her as a monster who cannot be compromised with, just as Mai and Ty Lee could no longer cooperate with Azula and chose to abandon her.One of the things fans love most about Azula is the fact that she is just so good at being a villain, representing a truly terrifying look at the power of obsession, familial pressure, and jealousy.

It's especially notable since during the Agni Kai where he actually got his scar Azula had a front-row seat and was enjoying it. The eponymous spirit temple, for instance, has a great Fire Nation design to it, filled with detail both on the outside and inside that make it feel like a real place. She doesn't learn anything she didn't know already (mostly because she knows it all but refuses to accept it), and the story ends right back at the beginning with no development or revelation at all. Azula is a very interesting character and the state things are right now makes her even more intriguing and filled with potential so having, at the very least, one full comic about her seems like a huge treat. She continues forward and arrives to a cliff overlooking a forest clearing, where the Fire Warriors have set their camp.
